You should never LEARN German grammar…
before you UNDERSTAND it!
The clearest explanations of German grammar to unlock your German learning potential
You are learning German, or at least interested in getting started.
Tell me, is learning German difficult?
Not a single student I met said easy.
But why? What exactly is difficult in German?
German is difficult to learn, because of its grammar!
3 genders? 4 cases? 16 articles? 48 types of adjective endings? Flipping verbs to the end of sentences? Thousands of ways to conjugate a verb?…
And that’s true, the grammatical system of German is indeed complicated. But is it that unachievable?
Maybe not – I have something for you.
I know your pain because I was once a struggling German learner.
14 years ago, I started learning German and did not know where to start.
Today, I am a qualified German teacher and have helped hundreds of students to understand and learn German better.
The only thing I did was to believe that comprehension should be the fundamental step of learning German (or actually, learning anything).
Now, I would like to share everything I know about German grammar on understand-german.com. Take a look at the courses and I am sure you will find something that you have always wanted to know about German!
See you inside!

Hi, I am CK, a robotics engineer living in Germany – and yes, I am also a German enthusiast and teacher, founder of Understand-German.com.
In case you want to know why a robotics engineer is teaching German, you can read my story:
⦁ Back in 2010, my dream came true – I got into one of the top universities in Hong Kong, studying mechanical and automation engineering.
I knew early on what I will study – But I had no clue that the question “where” could be a turning point in my life.
I met a girl from Germany in the dorm.
Fast forward a decade: this girl from Germany is now my wife and we have 3 lovely kids, living in Offenburg, a city on the edge of black forest.
Everything is wonderful now.
…but it was not the case at the beginning.
After we got serious with our relationship, I had to answer a big question:
Should I stay in Hong Kong and finish my study, or should I take the leap of faith and restart my life in Germany?
This question almost tore me apart.
Believe me, it was not an easy decision.
“You always regret that you did not do something, but seldom you did something.”
Silly enough to believe a saying I once read on the Internet, but I decided to go to Germany because of the fear of regretting.
Suddenly, learning German became the most important aspect of my life.
⦁ Before I learned German, I did try to learn French in school once, but I failed miserably. The exact same problem popped up – I did not understand the construction of a German sentence at all.
I just did not know how to start.
Some people told me that German is similar to English, I was naive enough to believe that I will be learning some kind of “modified version” of English, with some new vocabularies and slightly different form of grammar.
“You don’t need to speak German in Germany.” Some people argue.
Yes, you could. But there was a condition of the program I got into:
No graduation without a B2/C1 German certificate!
To make the situation worse: after the first year of program, the international students were mixed with the local students, all the lectures were then conducted in German.
All the lectures, all the material, all the exams – Everything. Is. In. German.
Could you imagine not only having to learn German, but also having to use your half-assed German to learn something highly technical and academic?
And I had only one year to prep myself up for this huge challenge!
As I tried my best to advance my German skills, I had so much questions…
Like all beginners do.
⦁ I tried a lot of learning methods and searched for answer to my questions for hours – maybe you will say that is meaningless, but I just couldn’t stand the feeling of reciting hard facts without comprehension!
I bought a lot of exercise books, reference material, grammar books, etc…
No questions were answered in a way that I can sleep well at night.
And when I ask my teachers, they said:
“You will understand this later”
“Accept this first. It is not important now.”
“Das ist Deutsch!(This is German)”
I was so insecure, even if I greeted someone with “Guten Morgen”, I irrationally thought that they would challenge me by asking me:
Why you have to say “guten” but not “gut” only?
⦁ It was no fun, I almost got depressed in the third semester in this never-ending fight with German.
I had to find a way out.
I decided to be kind to myself first: I gave myself time to ask questions and find answers on the internet.
As I was struggling, I lost my control. My note got chaotic, scribing on worksheets, notebook and textbook. Switching between written notes and digital notetaking app quickly.
Engineers have a good habit(normally): things should be in order, systematic and clearly organized. I was obsessed with organizing my notes for the engineering study at that point of time – why not doing so with my German study?
Let’s do it!
I organized my findings and slowly built up my personal German notes. It was mostly about the German grammar and how to understand the concepts.
⦁ I decided to open up a single OneNote notebook, wrote down the topics and questions one by one, and wrote down my findings accordingly.
No stop until I was happy with it – at the end I have a notebook with more than 100 pages of my personal notes.
Not only I kept writing, I also spent countless hours reviewing the notes and revising them as I needed.
It was only a belief I have: understanding is always the first part of a learning journey!
The power of my notebook was still unknown to me, until the winter of 2012 –
I decided to take my TestDaF exam earlier and to make sure that I have B2 to C1 level for the advanced part of the program.
⦁ The urge to prove that I made a right decision to come to Germany was unbelievably strong.
I needed a proof: I am right!
Not to the people around me but to myself – If I can make it, that means I can sweep out the last challenge out of the way and graduate as an engineer in Germany.
After the exam, I was obsessively checking the result on the website!
The moment the result got in, I was blown away.
TDN 5 for reading and listening, TDN 4 for writing and speaking.
In case you don’t know – that means I passed the exam!
From there on, I knew that I mastered one key aspect of German: the grammar.
Also by deepening my understanding and practicing what I have learnt, I got better and better.
The rest is history: I finished my study in 2014, wrote my thesis in German, passed the C2 exam in 2016 and now a qualified German teacher.
Everything came from that determination: I have to understand first!
⦁ “Isn’t it stupid to waste your time on those questions and answer?”
No, I am happy that I made the decision and paid all the effort!
And beyond the mastery of a new language, I have learnt so much on the way.
I became a person with more acceptance in communication.
Every time I encounter a challenge, I see differences only, not difficulties.
I became more creative, even in Cantonese and English, in terms of expressing my though.
Now you know why I am so eager to share my story and knowledge about German to you, right?
My last word: I sincerely want you to get the barriers out of the way and reach your goal in German (and Germany) and I will be more than happy if I can help you on the way.
“I cannot remember the grammar rules…”
In order to speak a language, especially German, you have to remember a lot.
Like, a lot!
But there is a huge difference between blind memorization and logical comprehension – imagine driving a car at night with almost no light on, you may still arrive at your destination, but how exhausting it can be?
After joining my course, you will be able to have a clear understanding of certain grammar items.
I will light up the road for you.
What is so special about your course?
Feature: Save you time and effort
Initially, I spent countless hours trying to find answers to my German grammar questions.
For beginners, understanding the rules and logic behind the language can dramatically accelerate their learning process.
With a clear comprehension, students can save hundreds of hours and greatly reduce frustration. Grasping these concepts early on not only saves time but also preserves sanity, making the learning journey less daunting and more efficient.

Your courses sound great, but…
But my German teacher said you don’t need to learn grammar…
Yes and no.
First, if you are not trying to reach any level higher than beginner, i.e. A1, you could jump over the grammar part and bite through (which I still would not recommend). Any level beyond A1 requires intensive grammar learning.
Second, your teacher said “you don’t need it”, because most of them don’t have a systematic and comprehensive way to teach you the grammar you need. Some of them try to avoid this part of teaching as far as possible – which I can understand, because teaching grammar is not an easy task.
Third, their short term goal in the course is getting you to the next one, investing time into an extensive explanation for a certain grammar topics in a live class just won’t fit the schedule. They would rather chop up a grammar topic into pieces and spread them throughout the entire curriculum – this approach may seem more “organic” but seeing only one step ahead may not be a pleasant way of learning for a lot of students.
If you are serious about learning German, you cannot run away from the grammar!
But my teacher said we will learn it later and understand naturally…
Why not now?
If the teacher is teaching young kids who can acquire the language just by pure exposure, then yes.
Teenagers and adult learners have the ability to have a good impression of a topic using their previous knowledge, learning experience and logical thinking. You can never understand something “naturally”. Let alone you may have a completely different language background.
But learning German grammar is so boring…
It is if taught wrong.
If you cannot explain the grammar to yourself, cram pages of grammar rule into your brain, do tons of exercises just to reinforce the muscle memory, I would feel the same!
But using a technical point of view, with a structural, comprehensive system, it can change the learning experience tremendously!
Don’t hear only what I say, hear what my students said.
But learning only the theory and grammar won’t help me master German…
You are right!
If you think my courses can magically improve all your skills the moment you finished watching, you should NOT join!
My courses focus on one thing and one thing only:
to help you understand the grammatical system of German better.
If you want to master German in all aspects, you still need other learning activities to support your growth.
In addition, although learning the grammar solely will not make you a fluent speaker, it is still a crucial part of the studying journey: You cannot master the language by learning the grammar only, but learning the grammar is a condition for mastering the language
Are these courses really for me?
This course is not for:
❌Casual learners; there are a lot of great material online for casual learning.
❌Learners who are happy with staying in A1 level; you can pretty much reach A1 without understanding the grammar.
❌Travelers who want to learn “Traveler German”; great that you plan to travel to this beautiful country! Sadly I won’t teach you a lot of phrases for daily conversations. Better save up the money and buy yourself a nice meal with great German beer!
❌Learners who are looking for interactive trainings; I cannot emphasize enough the importance of practicing the language with Germans. However, my courses consists of mainly videos with no interactive elements.
❌Learners who are looking for quick success; If anyone promises you that you can be successful in mastering a language within a short period of time, it’s just a scam.
This course is for:
✅Students, whose mother language shares only little linguistic similarities with German (Asian); My mother language is Cantonese and Chinese – grammatically completely different from any European language. Students from Asia generally have more resonance with me.
✅Students who speak basic level English; You don’t need to be an English major, if you can read this far, you are all set!
✅Students who tend to think logically and structurally; My teaching system emphasizes a ground up understanding in a logical, structural delivery, people who are in field of natural sciences, mathematics, IT and engineering find my course especially comprehensive and easy to follow
✅Learners who are interested in digging deeper into the “system” of German; Sometime while you are learning German, you feel like there should be a bigger picture behind it. If you are curious about this big picture, my courses should answer some questions you may have
✅Learners who just want to learn grammar better; Grammar is one of the most important aspect of German (or arguably any language in the world). Understand the German grammar better makes you speak better German
✅Learners who would like to be able to appreciate the logical and harmonic side of the language; As I went down the road of learning German, I love it more and more, German is a lovely language and the grammar is so cool!
A new way to boost your German learning
Without a solid grasp of German grammar, learners often resort to memorization, which can be overwhelming and frustrating. This approach creates a barrier, as it requires remembering numerous rules without truly understanding them.
However, my course offers a system that fosters genuine understanding of the language. This understanding not only motivates but also provides a new perspective, transforming the learning experience into something enjoyable and meaningful.
The key advantage of my approach is this shift from memorization to comprehension, offering a refreshing and effective way to learn German grammar.
If you want to stop grudging every minute when learning German, give yourself a chance and join me!
Feature
Value, no matter your level: My courses are design mostly level independent, you will learn something useful as a beginner or an advanced learner
Change of perspective and motivation: What is the best question to ask first, if you learn something? Yes, the question “why”. Only you understand why, you can be motivated and transformed into an active explorer.
Compact and clear: As an engineer I believe simplicity, clarity and system are key ingredients to a lot of things, including designing a machine or structuring a course. I will try my best to deliver the most valuable insights in the shortest time possible.
Leverage your intelligence as an adult: We are not children and we cannot learn language like them – but as an adult you can understand a lot of concepts which children cannot. I break down the complex German grammar system into a systematic presentation so that you can leverage your cognitive power.
Learning Companion: A learning companion should be available when you need it – the courses will be accessible for an extensive period of time, so that you will be guided all the way, until you are a successful German speak
er!
Warning: Not an “easy to take” course
Although my courses are extremely clear and structured, it still requires you to focus and engage with the material fully in order to reach next level.
This course is not for you if you just want to casually watch my videos and hope that you can master the language without effort.
Just like buying the gym membership won’t make you fit, you have to hit the gym yourself and work hard!
But I will be a companion of you, just like your personal trainer!

About the tutor
Hi, I am CK, welcome to Understand-German.com, a website which is aimed at helping German learners to understand German better!
I work mainly as an automation and robotics engineer, but from time to time, I am also a German tutor. Surprisingly, the structural, logical German grammar system shares a lot of similarities with my profession and hence the fascination!
The reasons why you can trust me:
In 2014, I graduated from a technical degree in German (B. Sc. Automation Technology)
In 2016, I obtained the Goethe-Zertifikat C2: Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom, which is the highest level you can archive in CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). According to Goethe-Institut: This exam certifies that candidates have acquired extremely advanced language skills
In 2022, I finished the Deutsch.Lehren.Lernen(DLL) training , a further education program recognized by BAMF as a qualified German teacher
Since 2017, I am the founder and direct tor of Stegermatt German School, an online German school teaching Hong Kongers German. I have had hundreds of students, gathered thousands of hours of teaching experience
I am a cooperation partner of Geothe-Institut Hongkong, we created an interview Series “A Hong Konger in Germany”, sharing my life and integration as a Hong Konger in Germany
Besides teaching German, I have consulted more than a hundred clients considering moving to Germany for study or work
I have worked as an Application Engineer in Germany after graduation, using German both in personal and professional scenarios almost everyday
I have lived in German since 2010, gathered a lot of life experience in Germany and understand the way Germans communicate
You are learning German and you are pulling your hair out because of the grammar, right?
I know your pain.
As someone comes from Hong Kong, my mother language is Cantonese. If you know the difference between the two language families(Sinitic and Germanic), it’s day and night in terms of grammar.
And yet I survived – I got my C2 certificate and became a qualified German teacher.
The secret? I tried my best to understand the German grammar first.
